Abstract

The speech-language therapy approach within a psychoeducational program is grounded in the belief that caregivers will take on a more active role and better support children throughout their treatment, as long as they understand what is happening to them and become familiar with strategies to help. Including caregivers as implementers of the intervention promotes the generalization of the content addressed in therapy sessions to everyday environments, thereby consolidating learning over time.

This paper describes the work carried out under this modality at Health Center No. 9, where caregiver-mediated intervention was introduced as a new paradigm in speech-language therapy for children with language delay. From its inception to the present, the implementation of this new line of work has evolved according to ongoing observations, the results obtained, and the availability of resources.

This form of intervention has had a positive impact on treatment adherence, families’ understanding of children’s linguistic difficulties, and the adoption of various strategies to stimulate language within the context of daily family routines.
