Abstract

In an inherently interdependent manner, hearing and cognition develop together and support functional capacity in healthy adults. In this context, the goal was to analyze the relationship between self-reported auditory function and self-reported cognitive performance in adults from the province of Córdoba in 2024.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive, correlational study was conducted in a population of 211 people. They signed an informed consent and filled out a form of sociodemographic data, the Amsterdam Inventory for Auditory and Disability Handicap – Spanish version (S-AIADH), the self-report of Memory Failures in Everyday (MFE-30) questionnaire, and the Executive Complaints Questionnaire (ECQ). The level of significance considered for statistical analysis was p < 0.05. Results: The average age was 36.03 years old (SD = 19.25). In terms of auditory function, 89.1 % reported a good level and 10.9 % a regular level. In terms of cognitive performance, 25.1 % reported an optimal level, 14.7 % a mild level, and the remaining 8.5 % reported a moderate to severe level. In the self-report of the Executive Complaints Questionnaire, 57.82 % revealed a moderate performance, 37.44% a mild performance, and 4.74 % a severe performance. A significant relation between auditory function-cognitive performance and cognitive performance-executive functions was found in this study. In addition, an association was observed between auditory functioning and executive functions. Conclusions: The relationship between self-reported auditory function and self-reported cognitive performance in autonomous adults makes evident the interdependence between hearing and cognition, which highlights the importance of considering hearing health in aging, and its possible impact on cognition.
